Meet Michelle

The two band members that I find so hard to photograph well are Michelle (bass) and Mike (drums). Michelle never stays still enough for me to get some good shots in low light, I'm considering super glue to her boots in future!

Update : Just noticed, I'm 50 today and I feel it to!

Update : I'm not 50, the image is!!!

Update : Oi!!!!! I'm not bloody 50, the bloody image is hee hee LOL

All the best Mal

nice event capture.
hey,love this shot,
i have a band,i play the keyboards, when they are covering or playing hard rock or something that does not require me i usually just end up taking lots and lots of pics, even if we are on stage...! its great fun,
anyhow the problem i often face is at a high zoom around say 200mm or a bit less and an iso of say 400-800 pictures end up blurring, and i dont want to fire the flash as it kills the colours, just wanted a few tips in this regard...which lens u using and what iso are you shooting at?(i cant see the EXIF details for some reason)
Mal: Hi Shiv, welcome to Shutter.

A classic problem no light, long lense, hand held. I generally do gig work at iso800 (I'm not keen on digital grain, but have not tried some of the newer noise reduction programmes) on F2.8 on aperture priority. If the light is constantly changing you just have to take your chances. Idealy if you around 150mm focal length you really need to be above 80th of a sec due to camera shake but if you can use a monopod that will help.

I've got to say that I sometimes use a scatter gun approach and set the camera on multiple shot mode and fire off 4-5 shots as fast as the camera can cope, I've often found that of the 5 at least one is usable.

Best tip I can give is to take a couple of mins to study the subject and look for lighting hot spots on the stageand wait till the subject is in that position. Mal

You have done well here Mal. Type of shot I love.
This is going too far Mal, get on some naked birds like Suby!!!This lady really does look sooo much like Chrissie Hynde in this shot. I am starting to get really peed off with your alarming knack of getting great shots on here, so either post some crappy ones for me to moan about or mail me a course on "Photography for Dummies"!!
Seriously though Mal, another superb shot and great use of the existing bad light. Magic. Regards, Neil.
Mal: How about naked ladies playing rock Neil? wink Mal

Hi Mal, these band shots are great! Please take it as at a compliment but they remind me of 70/80's album covers.
Mal: Thank you Eileen, I do take it as a comp, it was my intention to be a bit t-rex. Mal
