photoblog image Boy

Boy

Sam last seen http://www.mal.shutterchance.com/photoblog/22019.htm he is a wonderful young man!

Any one who is into U2 will understand the title.

http://www.u2.com/image.php?img=http://www.u2.com/music/albumcovers/md_3.jpg&img_type=discog&img_extra=3

I've had a mixed reaction to this image from friends, so I want your honest opinion!

I'm flying out to Japan and then Aus possibly on Sunday (depending on BA strikes) and am struggling to find the time responding to comments! What time I do have I would prefer to spend on your site, please forgive me.

All the best. Mal

wow I want to be the first one to compliment with you for this really beautiful portrait, but I know that I will not the last one
Don't know what your freinds thought but I like. It's almost like he's saying ok what's next or Can I stop now ! It's the eyes. I love the eyes.

Excellent Mal. My only niggle is that you've cropped a little bit of his chin. Have you done this with tungsten or flash? Safe journey!
Sam has precious eyes. You have made a picture magnificent. Of what color they are its eyes? P.D.: Have a good travel and Sayonara!

I like the softness of this image. The expression (or lack of) on his face is what makes this photo for me. He looks like he is in that daydream state. His eyes are literally hypnotic in this picture. From a technical perspective, I feel the photo is overexposed. From an artistic perspective, I feel the photo is great. Keep up the good work.

Did you use flash in his face?? ... your child portraits are very very impressive Mal
Nice soft edges and then the eyes so sharp. Something memorizing about it. Excellent photo. Buts does have a sense alarm, power or some kind of energy in the eyes that takes this beyond a cute and cuddly photo.
While I love the sharpness of the eyes and the soft face- something about this photo just rubs me the wrong way. A little too bright for the look he's giving you. It's like the photo's mood is a bit sweet and innocent but his expression has a bit of concern/frustration/some emotion that's not as positive. There's a disconnect.

Leaves me with mixed feelings. A great picture in general, except for the chin chop. The image i think is too soft and sweet for Boy - but this is where my interpretation comes in vs somebody else's. The eyes restore some of the mood.

Have a nice trip and remember some blurs of hopping joey's. With strikes in the air make sure you are on the right flight smile
looks like Kurt Cobain as a child. May he rest in peace (Kurt Cobain)

Soft focus works well with children and women's portrait. I like the diagonal composition and the clarity of the eyes.
I really like the composition here Mal. The PP is great too

hey mal. i actually had a very large poster of U2's War (same kid - he appeared on 3)on my wall for many many years. The print itself showed that the boy had two different coloured eyes. (brown and blue i think??) i was in love with the image for so long, and had forgotten about it. Thank you for the new image to appriciate and also the memory. i hope your trip is smooth and peaceful. Sara

It presents a very pure image and the lack of crisp focus gives it an angelic feel. I like it.

I think it's a fabulous image Mal, I really do

But I think I would have preferred a little bit of body with it. He seems almost ethereal, ghostly without that connection. I don't know if a picture like this of an adult face would have that same impact on me.

the shot is like Boy and also like holly teehee. i dont mind about the crop, in fact i would have cropped a touch higher at the bottom but thats me. what is captured is the beauty and innocence of childhood and theres plenty of time in a boys life to be portrayed as masculine. 'A boy tries hard to be a man' or so the song goes.
Honest opinion eh?
I like the high key feel with the dark background to separate the face... but being so close in might be hurting in this shot. It just feels too cropped in. Chin is chopped... same with ear and forehead. This is often acceptable (depends on what you're after) but this one feels too tight to me.
I don't know why people are saying those eyes are sharp... they're blurry. The 5D should be performing WAY better... but shooting at 70mm at 1/30 will definitely cause you problems (especially with children).

You've captured some real emotion there that draws you in. I also like the slight angle that the face is framed in.

The contrast draws you to the eyes, so composition is good that way. They're also placed off center which will satisfy the "thirds" people.
The 5D seems to have handled the digital noise quite well at ISO 1000... or you've done a really nice job on the reduction.

I think the only real bad point of the image is in the eyes. The focus is slightly missed and contains enough motion blur to just put them out of focus and a bit soft. You could probably help that with some contrast adjustments, and some sharpening techniques.

Since you were so tight already and the ears are already out of focus, opening up the lens some more to get shutter speed up would have certainly helped... assuming you had room to move down from F5. You also had some room on ISO a bit.
