Soon enough...all that remains of the great whale is its crumbling skeleton...at home in the shallows...

I don't even know how to thank Philine for contributing to the appearance of two wonderful images on today's shutter.
An image of many dimensions.
There's so much to find here that's not immediately obvious like the geometry of the reflection.

A fascinating pic- always anew! Mal's photo's belong ( for me if I might confess)) to those ones which are deeply engraved (or burnt) into in my brain and inner eyes! I can't forget them! Frank, I think this one could tell us a story, too! The longer I look at this rotting ship the more it gets the qualitiy of a modern sculpture. -With the best, best wishes for you!

Oh I have read all the honours of the previous 45 comments. And they are right. And yes, Philine is a special person.

Looking at your picture, I am wondering about the paint tube trying to take a last blast at the hulk. It could also be your vaseline thingy.

What makes the picture special is that you have the first evidence of the new ice age, and then with a viking sailer stuck in the first ice.

Excellent picture - the shadow of the galley deserves special mention.

I don't know what I can say at this point that hasn't already been said. Stunning!
Quite mythic somehow. It's that soupy sea and strange shadows.
The shadow cast on the water's surface is the icing on the cake!
The context you have given this vision adds such richness to what is already a feast for the eyes and mind!

Sometimes I' m looking at the pic if the galley perhaps has already a bit sunk into the deep sea, but I'm not sure if that has happened. The ship lies there like having got caught for eternity. The longer I see that ship the more it becomes a kind of monument, a monument for all the people who tried to emigrate, to escape by boat and..., I don't think only of the boat people from Vietnam and Africa...- there are many examples in our former and new history...- an interpretation which could be inspired by a monument in the former Concentration Camp in Westerbork/Netherlands I saw. "As if giant hands were at work after about 20 meters the track is destroyed and the rails point skyward ... no train will ever leave from here again with its human cargo!" A very touching monument- here and there!
