Just a rose
Just a rose.
all the best. mal. If anyone is interested, the shot was a 30 sec exposure with the light being painted in with a small pen torch.

"the light being painted in with a small pen torch."
I'm not sure what that means but Mal, this is exquisite. It's very painterly. I almost see brush strokes....of paint. Gorgeous!!
Mal: its a really easy technique Mary and a lot of fun. camera set on a tripod and set for the shutter to stay open for, lets say 30 secs, just use a tiny penlight to paint in light where you want over the period that the shutter is open. many thanks. mal
Very nice light painting... that turned out very nice.
Mal: cheers Rich, great to hear from you, I'd like to try some more of this type of image making. mal
It's a beautiful example of light painting. I've only seen that technique in larger settings, never in a macro. Stunning.
Mal: its a lot of fun and very hit and miss, but the results can be satisfying. cheers Jewlya. mal
Excellent results Mal.
Mal: cheers Eni, I'm running out of ideas at the moment, lol. mal
Interesting take on the rose. I've always wanted to try light painting...now i'm motivated
Mal: that's great to read Stan, looking forward to your results. mal
Thanks for that extra information, love this so much, it is a challenge to try it too. Thanks for sharing.
Mal: you'll have a lot of fun Astrid, but be prepared to get a lot of rubbish results before a good one comes along. thankyou. mal
It has given it a very unusual effect, as though the rose is made of paper or fabric. It almost looks like some kind of exotic creature. I have only tried painting with light once, and it turned out rubbish - must try it again.
Ingrid
Mal: please do try again Ingrid, i did not keep track but i'm guessing that I took about 30 shots and got 2 useable ones. mal
Wow, stunning details and colours.
Mal: cheers Frank. all the best. mal
What a lovely shot. Delicacy and softness enhanced by technique. Love the way it fades to black at the sides and wish it did the same at top and bottom.
Mal: i have 2 versions of this Ron, one of them is closer to your request, flipped a coin as to which one to post. cheers. mal
Stunnig shot Mal.
Mal: cheers Mick, its a little different but I quite like it to. mal
whatever light painting is, i love it! this is really beautiful, Mal.
Mal: its a really easy technique Mo and a lot of fun. camera set on a tripod and set for the shutter to stay open for, lets say 30 secs, just use a tiny penlight to paint in light where you want over the period that the shutter is open. many thanks. mal
Painting with a penlight torch on a long exposure sounds like a lot of fun...the result is gorgeous too.
Mal: give it a go on a rainy day Ray, its fun but a little frustrating at times. mal
Beautiful capture Mal. Colours are gorgeous!
Your ability of making even a flower look moody amazes me.. Petra
Mal: many thanks young lady. mal
What a lovely feel this shot has Mal.
Nice composition.
Mal: cheers Tracy, I liked this one. mal
a brilliant idea! Reminds me of a Georgia O'Keeffe painting. very arty.
Mal: had to google that name Rhys, very impressive work. cheers. mal
Far more than just a rose, of course... Very good indeed.
Mal: thank you very much, its a fun technique to. mal
A technique I have never used mal - very subtle effect. like jewlya I have only seen it done on larger subjects - usually figurative.
Mal: i had a go at light painting a castle in scotland, I was nearly arrested for annoying people! lol. mal
This is exquisite Mal.
Mal: cheers Bill, a little different for me. mal
great idea mal, looks amazing, really interested in macro. thinking of getting into this area.
Mal: you should Mr S, save it for a rainy day, quite fun. mal
Absolute cracker Mal - never seen this technique before but you have now whetted my appetite!! Cheers, David.
Mal: great David, its fun on a rainy day. mal
OE's loss is our gain. I still like this a lot. The other day I read about how people light-paint buildings with most startling results. I'll have to try that one day.
Mal: the first one that i've tried again over there Martin. mal
A rose by any other name! Wonderful details Mal.
Mal: cheers Chris, hope all is well with you. mal
"When the light above my head went BAM!"
BAM! That's what I felt when I openned the page, Mal. Wow. Absolutely a. may. zing. Personally I think this may be the most awesome shot I've ecer seen on SC... :o
Mal: well Andy, that is very high praise indeed, and very lovely to hear, I feel quite humbled. mal
Very very interesting. Superb array of curves. It is another way to see roses.
Great!
Mal: thank you very much, very much appreciated. mal
Mal, I've been experimenting with "painting with light" for a while now. This is one of the most beautiful I've seen. Love the flakiness and linen look to those delicate petals.
Mal: cheers Kathryn, its very hit and miss as you know, I took quite a few to get 2 that I liked. mal
We know Mal "The Mystery Man".
We know Mal "The Philosopher". Now we know Mal "The Tender Soul". You hid this side of you from us for quite some time, my friend.
Mal: Shhhhhhh, Z! Don't tell everyone! lol
many thanks Z, its great to read your input, and maybe you are right. mal
Excellent rendering by tricky mal. I should have said Mystery Mal - a more friendly version
Mal: cheers Louis, Tricky Mal, I like that. lol. mal
That's a great effect! Never tried light painting before and reckon I'll have to give this a go. The textures in the rose are just magic.
Mal: cheers Bob, its a rainy day indoor activity, quite fun to. mal
You really surprise me with this one Mal, no no no, not with the artistry, not with the superb handling and combination of techniques (macro and light painting), not with the mood, it is just, how did you get to combine that all on this subject!!
A true artist... Utter respect!!
Mal: cheers Mr K, I have to say that I really like this one but OE rejected it! lol. mal
wow, the colour, detail and texture in this is amazing...painting with light this is something i've been meaning to try and I am now inspired...cheers
Mal: good, wait for a rainy day and have fun. mal
This is a stunner, mal. True artistry. A likey for me.
Mal: many thanks Red Pen, a little different for me but I had fun making it. mal
Not JUST a rose. A gorgeous composition and the colours are perfect. That is a pure piece of stunning art. It there a print hanging on your wall yet?
Mal: lol - I need to buy a printer first Michael, many thanks and all the best. mal
hey! didn't i likey a similar image way back?
still quite jawdroppin'
Mal: yes, very similar, I took 30 shots like this two of them were ok, this is the second, many thanks Doc. mal
Beautiful detail and lighting, Mal.
Mal: Mary Beth, thank you very much, it different for me but it was fun doing it. mal
Thanks for the info, it's always nice to get some technical details behind your masterpieces.
The picture really has a very painterly flavor - works great with the flower, especially with those rather thick, massive leafs. Your DOF is also spot on, I really like that the center of sharpness coincides with the centre of lightning - and when moving outwards things become more soft and subtle.
Mal: what a great critique and comment Thomas, it is great to read, thank you. mal
Ok, so is this actually a rose or is that a stupid question?
Very beautiful shot Mal!
Mal: yes, its a real rose Nadine, long exposure with a pen torch painting in the light. cheers Nadine. mal
Wow Mal very different stuff from your other shots. I like it very much.
G
Mal: I'm getting old and soft G! lol. mal
Really beautiful, Mal. Gorgeous color.
Mal: cheers Otto. mal
this is absolutely gorgeous Mal. and thanks for the insight on how it was captured
Mal: its a lot of fun my friend and quite easy to do to. thank you. mal
Mal, this is an astonishing picture it's almost pulling me in - amazing!
I've read all your replies - was there any other light source? I mean, did you take this during the day or at night?
See, I said your work was inspiring, I have been looking at ways to improve lighting techniques to my flower pics, and here you come along and inspire me
This is excellent and I will be trying it out!
This is not just a rose...it is a very beautiful capture, technique resulting a wonderful rose photo!-mind you I am never very found of roses but I like this one!
i had read your comment about doing a macro, no way i thought, Vaseline sprang to mind. Pen torch...i should have known
Very beautiful and mesmerizing.
I did a few portraits using this same technique a while back. I really enjoyed doing them. Maybe you've broken through my block for me, I might dig one out and post it.
hey mal,
Is that the same rose? http://mal.shutterchance.com/photoblog/The_Dilly_Rose/ Apparently I was wrong in my remark. I should've known better. You softened up quite a time ago.
WOW!!!
I must try this technique - thanks for the tip.
Just excellent ! very nice composition ! Very nice colors...
Mal, I'd heard about light painting but this is the first I've seen. It's wonderful! I agree that it looks like some silk fabric, the detail is superb.
I think you are the next best thing to Vernon Trent! Keep going with your vision, and let it come naturally.
Terrific picture and effect. You're a master !
Beautiful shot, Mal. I don't understand why I've not seen this one yet.
Mal is a magician. Any objection?
This is fabulous amongst many of your fabulous shots Mal. You've got great stuffs in your archive.
Hello Malcolm! I want to prepare a contest on the subject of " The Rosa" that there is in my town. You could say to me since you made this wonder! The light enchants to me!
