Man Alone
A few people asked how the effect of the last image was achieved. With the last one and with this no digital effects are present other than to switch to to b/w and a slight crop only. The technique is 1930's processing.
Without emotion, without a feeling, without a soul there is no point!
All the best. mal

any intentional camera shake? We can always do with some new tricks
Cool Mal,
But I struggle to understand your comments above expecially "The technique is 1930's processing." Am I being stupid but WHAT TECHNIQUE are you talking about? Maybe a little bit more information would help Suby
Mal, know you've got to share your secret(s) with me. What can i do to shoot like you? Seriously
From Post Modernism to a visual intellectualism (no such term, just coined it now
One could also say: without thinking, without action, and without compassion a politician is born. But yes, without emotion and reaction there is no point in connecting with others... So, without love, trust, honesty, open communication, and faith there can be no meaningful relationship between man, God, woman, child, art, and yourself; therefore without emotion, you are only left with your life's business plan. What is life without love? Very good photograph, and statement you laid out here my friend! Without Mal, there is no shutterchance I am glad we're friends, keep up the good work! -Raymond
hey mal,
wow, a very abstract, eerie shot. i love the airy feeling to the shot, and the white whispy trails really add to the atmosphere.
In the first moment the photo is of terror ... on having centered you realize of the figures. It is as when sos small and you are the darkness afraid and late on having grown you realize that alone were objects. It is horrible that when it grows peirda. =) For that I like more the photo of terror.
you're right about the fact that if there is no emotion that there is no point. (unless we are talking zombies and without those there would be no 'return of the living dead'). i love the lighting in the shot emphasizing the isolation of the man. Once again the title is a perfect fit with the image. I was watching a documentary the other night about some receivers of heart transplants having memories and sensations of their donors. i think you have given us a transplant here. fanstastic shot mal.
He might be 'alone' but he's walking in the light..not a bad place to be..even in the rain..Another gem, Mr. Mal. I love your words: "without emotion, without a feeling, without a soul, there is no point!"
You're a gem, Mal.
Strange atmosphere, but so nice shot ! Well done Mal !
only you can turn a man on the street to a zombie in a burial ground...heehee...lol
Caotic, beautiful, atractive...
All I can do is say WOW !!
Another fabby-dabby-doso shot from the Malmeister. Very effective. I was putting together a comment ruminating on the technical methods you might have employed for this shot as your explanation is somewhat cryptic
But I lost the comment when I did something or other and it's just as well 'cos I reckon I've figured out how you did it, although it's not a method I've ever tried myself. Keep it up Mal, your photography is something we should all aspire to.
you've got to tell us more than '1930s processing'! However you do it, it is a great effect
Ohh scary! Have you seen the film Constantine when they are in Hell? Reminds me so much of that. Very good Mal.
makes me think of the movie 'Falling Down'...
This is something else Mal. Love this kind of shot. A load of artistry to get it right.
awesome shot
As usual, i'm trying to figure out how you achieved this. I'm a bit confused: you said there was no significant editing - which, i think, means that you achieved the effect of this today's image through your camera at the time the shot was taken, rather than subsequently, through some software or in a darkroom, but 1930's PROCESSING implies otherwise. Praytell, what is the secret of this shot?
Awesome shot, by the way.
I have a post coming up on monday and many of the lines here reminds me of what can be seen in that picture. All these questions reminds me that maybe I should add in an explanation how it was done. You EXIF says you used Av, where I used Tv. Any how enough of that.
Spellbinding picture. It looks as if this guy took off his coat while walking in buckets full of rain. So either he love rain or he couldn't care less - your title indicates the latter. 1930's processing
this is a shot one can feel the what is said. very nice Mal
Forgive this connection, Mal, but your text has reminded me of what several witnesses have said about the man who did the senseless shootings at VA Tech this week: he was emotionless! No expression on his face!
So maybe we can go one step further and say that without emotion, without a feeling, without a soul there is mental illness/disturbia! Thanks for illiciting so much thought!
Yum, me likey.
"Without emotion, without a feeling, without a soul there is no point!" never said a truer word mal....
love the shot, one of those absolute stunners...
Now this one's scary!!!
amazing, surreal image
this is very lovely Mal.
Bonjour,
Well done shot! Strange...Bravo!
very nice as usual, I like the BW.
Excellent shot. Photography through beer goggles!
Moody, morose, and also very good!
Now tell us what you mean by 1930's processing!
Hi Mal. I believe you deliberately produce surreal images, such as this stunning example. I occasionally achieve something like this by accident, and am presently incapable of reproducing them...I have a lot to learn about photography, and looking at your photoblog is helping.
Regarding your provocative words....actually, I think there is always a point, although it can sometimes be a little obscure. If emotion/feeling/soul are not present, then perhaps the point is that a "Quest" is called for find these missing/mislaid pieces.
le flou est délicieux
Eerie. Very evocative.
That's certainly a contrast to all those spring pictures that pop up in all blogs, galleries and photo-forums right now. Looks like heavy rain - I hope, the photo is not supposed to picture spring weather at your place...!
Feels a bit like an old french film noir.
Eerie and thought-provoking. The man seems very robot-like. Numb. Your words fit the photo. I like the 1930's processing, and, well... you know I like B&W!
These are that type of photos that… or you like or you do not like. This one to my, I like.
Enigmatic as ever, Mal. Black Friday?
Great effect Mal
Hi Mal,
This is good...I like the effect...it is totally how you say "without emotion, feeling and soul" and to me is a symbol for large American corporations. But that's another story.
It really fits to the title
This is a powerful picture. To me it looks like a man so depressed that he doesn't even put on his coat in a downpour.
Oh Mal this is splendid! Like Martin said, it's really powerful. Otherworldly. It reminds me of something from Sin City (which I loved by the way)!
Dzień dobry!
Dear Omnipotent Shutterchance Presence.... Just had a nosey around what you've been posting images of lately.... your recent images and titles struck a chord. Maybe your blog is predeterminging my emotional state.... I need you to post some less sombre images so I can cheer up a bit. Ps - I think maybe I'm going mad??? PPs - Don't even think to reply with 'going... I think that happened a long time ago!'
Ok this is getting scary!! your recent images show how i am feeling at the moment. i agrre with Lisa post something to cheer us up. Thanks. Great image again.
looks like you busted your new lens.
Very nice image, quite surreal and thought provoking. You've got a great creative streak.
This is mindblowing!!! Love it! simply superb image here ... very surreal.
Great work, Mal. With every image you create art. Every image is infused with surreal creativity.
this is an awesome shot! WOW
Strewth mal.. SC won't allow me to use any of the words I wanted to use to say how gob-smackingly good this shot is!
Wow!! Mysterious! Nice work.
Lovely shot.
Nicely done Mal. Nicely stated. Simple photo using a simple technique. Awesome!
Amazing image Mal - really like this one!
A great atmosphere here - Thumbs up !!
Great shot. atmosphere; action; tone. nice work.
