Whitby Blues

Thank you for all the comments yesterday, I shall try to do some more portraits next week.

This was taken last week from Sandsend looking over to whitby. It was very late and the conditions very dark, hence the shutter time, you can even see the light trails of the cars in the top right of the image on the Whitby - Saltburn road. I used the Hoya R72 for this one

So, you do this with a tripod, right? And what's the advantage of using such a low ISO? I normally choose 400 for low light shots...
I hope the questions don't bother you; I want to learn a bit, and may be one day I'll be able to take wonderful pictures like yours.

Mal: I don't mind answering great questions Samira. If you have the tripod with you then you have loads of time to take the image, so why decrease the quality of the image at iso400? It is a throw back from my film days, I always try to put in the camera the very best image that I can at the capture stage. Always remember that the camera set at iso400 is the camera set at a poorer quality of capture so therefore if you have the time, go good quality! You can always add grain later in a more controlled environment in PS later if you so wish. Mal

Mal this is another wonderful shot. The long exposure = perfection! I really like how the horizon is low-contrast and the foreground is high contrast.

Mal: I thought that you and a couple of others might spot it Iain. I used an ND8 soft grad also to hold back the horizon detail and exagerate the misty sea. Well spotted. Mal

Mal: Funny you mention cooking Petra! Whitby is amous in the UK as being one of the premier fishing villages. I stopped off for some traditional fish and chips on the way home, just after this image. They were great!! Yum. Mal

166s exposure... sheesh. Did you have a remote control with a shutterlock? Well composed and exposed. How many attempts before you got this one right?

Mal: Hi Carl. Unusualy this one was first time! I took a straight shot without the R72 at iso3200 @ F2.8 then calculated back to give me 150 secs, but through experience I know the filter is darker than the claimed 18 stops so guessed an extra 15 secs. Mal

Mal, this is a georgeous picture ... and you always take georgeous ones !! It seems to be a wonderful place, magical and full of mystery... if the lights of the city weren't there, I would have thought (?) of this arthurian landscapes... is Camelot around ?

You have some darned good stuff in your archives, but in my opinion, this is oe of the best.

I like it for its simplicity, its mood, the composition, tones, and the overall feel of it. Even that wet road with the light glinting on it (top right) is not distracting but adds to the story; it leads you somewhere.

And I'm not usually a fan of slow shutter speeds to blur water either - well I wasn't, but I am now.

A class winner.

This is a lovely dream like shot, the shot also has an ethereal feel to it, one of my favourite spots....

I think I have to start using a tripod. Masterful, Mr. Mal.

Mal: You can get away without it Suzanne, but you have to sacrifice quality of image. Even a really small cheap tripod is worth it's weight in gold. Hee hee Masterful Mal. This is not what people who have met me in person say!

I like how despite the very long exposure you have managed to get some details on the white areas of the photos! I also like the separating lines on the horizon and between layers of clouds. I wish I could see a bit more of the road, it could add to the composition instead of just being distracting. Over all a very interesting shots with few layers and lots of details to look at. I am wondering what is the significance of using a R72 filter?

Mal: Hi Nariman, Thank you for the lovely comment. I also took some images with the x-pan camera to which expand upon the scene but do not look good on shutter. The filter is an IR Hoya R72 filter! But I use it as an 18 stop ND filter in b/w. Mal

i obviously dont know whether i am coming or going by not commenting on this one mal. These dreamy ethereal shots are such eye candy and looking forward to seeing more of them. i was wondering if we were going to see some x-pan shots but as you say shutters restrictive format is probably not rght for them.
